5 ways chess helps children at school

By Coach Warren Elliott 1 min read

Chess is a game, but the habits it builds follow children into the classroom.

In over 20 schools across Jamaica, WeChess is proud to play its part in spreading chess and building thinking skills. Here are five habits the game builds.

1. Focus

A game of chess asks for calm, steady attention. Children learn to sit with one problem until they find an answer.

2. Thinking ahead

"If I move here, what will my opponent do?" Picturing the next move is planning, and planning is a skill every subject needs.

3. Bouncing back

Every game ends with a handshake. A loss becomes a lesson to study, not a reason to quit.

4. Patience

Rushed moves lose games. Children learn to slow down, check their work and only then commit.

5. Confidence

Beating a grown-up across the board is a feeling a child never forgets.

When we learn with pleasure, we never forget.
